Artist Statement
My work questions our immersion into the digital realm and how the fusion of real and virtual might affect our psyche. The drawings and paintings investigate the in-between space of both worlds converging using an abstract-mimetic hybrid approach to determine imagery and content. I am interested in the fragmentation of space and the active use of imagination or invention to elevate the work, pushing its naturalistic elements using graphic shapes or high color saturation.
Clarisse Abelarde received a BFA in drawing and painting at CSU Long Beach and four Associates Degrees in General Arts, Liberal Arts, Studio Art, and Art History at Los Angeles City College. Abelarde recently completed the Quinn-Emanuel artist-in-residence in 2023 and is the founder, director, and project manager for Nous-Ance Projects, an online platform for artist interviews, blogs, and annual exhibitions in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in publications such as Hyperallergic, Primary Magazine, and The City of LA Department of Cultural Affairs Calendar and Cultural Guide. Abelarde’s paintings have been shown in galleries such as Superchief Gallery, Residency Art Gallery, Stay Gallery, and much more.
As she develops her more recent work, Abelarde’s paintings echo the visceral impact of the abstract expressionist movement emphasizing paint physicality and raw emotion. Combining the techniques and skills she has accumulated throughout the years, she sees a balance between chaos and structure. Abelarde lives and works in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles amid the hustle and bustle of city life, which serves as her inspiration daily.
